As it gets closer to Valentine's Day, I thought it would be a nice idea to start on some cute little decorations to set around the house.

Courtney, my daughter slash primitive designer slash master of coming up with creative ideas for table decor on the fly, made some of the cutest little salt dough hearts that I want to share with you.

Just to give you a little background about what Courtney does in the shop, she’s on top of a lot of our primitive designs. She’s always researching and coming up with cool ideas. In between studying for college and running her very own shop, she finds time to delve in and help good ol’ Mom.

Here are some snowmen that Court created for our primitive Christmas line.

So...while she was working on these really cute hearts, I sneaked a few and took a pic!

DIY Hearts for Valentine's Day Decorating

The idea is to use them as little bowl fillers. You could add them to potpourri or dried rose hips for added cuteness.


Imagine if you painted them red before you added them to the potpourri.

Another idea is to rub them with Elmer's glue and sprinkle them with glitter.

Like the country, primitive look? What about if you took a little cinnamon and Elmer's glue and rubbed it all over them and let them dry overnight? You'd get that serious grungy look.

So many possibilities with these little guys.

So here's a quick DIY to show you how you can make these cute little heart shaped bowl fillers to set on your table for easy Valentine’s Day décor.

What to do:

You'll first need a quick salt dough recipe. So mix up the following in a sturdy bowl:

1 cup flour
1/3 cup salt
About 3/4 cup cold water (make sure it's nice and cold)

Mix your dry ingredients and slowly add the cold water until the dough resembles a soft ball of dough.

Now it's time to roll that dough!

Lightly flour your counter surface enough so that the dough won't stick when you roll it.
Roll out the dough and use a cookie cutter or a knife to cut out little heart shapes.

Courtney made tiny hearts, but you could easily make larger ones and even add a nail in the center of each to string them.

Bake them in the oven at 250° for about 15 minutes (for smaller hearts - the larger the hearts, the more time it will take so watch them carefully).

You want a white colored heart that's nice and dry and hard.

Once the hearts are completely dry, you can decorate them as your heart's content. If you're using them as stringed ornaments, be sure to remove the nails from the center once the hearts have cooled and not when they're hot. Sometimes I'm so impatient that I want them out immediately. You can imagine how that's turned out.

That's it! It's an easy way to add a little V day decor to your table or your Christmas tree (if you're one of those people who like to keep it up until all of the needles fall to the floor). No judging here. 😉
